New Jersey Lawmakers Pressured to Improve Safety for Injured Warehouse Workers

How Can We Help You

New Jersey Lawmakers Pressured to Improve Safety for Injured Warehouse Workers

Workers’ Compensation New Jersey lawmakers are being pressured to improve safety for injured warehouse workers after numerous serious injuries have occured in recent years. Warehouse Workers Stand Up is a coalition that works to improve safety for all New Jersey factory and warehouse workers. Most recently, the coalition held a press conference and rally to discuss the unfair treatment and unsafe working conditions found in many New Jersey warehouse facilities.

This rally came just one week after a devastating incident occurred at a giant Amazon warehouse in Robbinsville. One person was critically injured and another two dozen were injured when a can of bear repellant fell off of a shelf. An additional 30 workers were treated at the scene but released without injury. The active ingredient in bear repellant is an irritant that can cause serious injury to the lungs, the throat, and the eyes.

Shockingly enough, this wasn’t Amazon’s first bear repellant injury incident of the year. In Indiana, another bear repellant accident occurred earlier this year and earlier in 2015, a can exploded at an Amazon facility in Texas.

Safety Groups Want Lawmakers to Act Now

Warehouse jobs are becoming more and more dangerous and these dangers cause serious injury to workers. Safety groups and unions are demanding change in the industry and they’re calling on New Jersey lawmakers to act now. There have been calls for large warehouse giants like Amazon to adopt a strict code of conduct, including improved wages, additional benefits, stricter safety training, and reasonable productivity quotas.

Injured Warehouse Workers Can Collect Workers’ Compensation Benefits

Injured warehouse workers in New Jersey are entitled to collect workers’ compensation benefits. These benefits include reimbursement for medical care and disability, death benefits to families,  as well as a percentage of lost wages. If an injured worker is unable to work temporarily, due to a job-related injury or illness, they can collect temporary disability benefits up to a maximum 400 weeks. Injured workers are entitled to receive benefits up to 70% of their average weekly wage up to a maximum. In 2018 the minimum amount an injured worker could receive was $241 and the maximum was $903 a week.

If an injured New Jersey worker is not expected to recover from their injuries, then they may be entitled to permanent disability benefits. This could be partial permanent disability or total permanent disability, depending on the individual’s injury and severity of their injury.

It is important to know that while most injuries are covered under New Jersey workers’ compensation laws, there are a few situations that could prevent you from obtaining the benefits you need – and deserve. An experienced New Jersey workers’ compensation lawyer can help you during this difficult time and ensure that you receive all of the benefits to which you are entitled.
