Preventable New Jersey Car Accidents

How Can We Help You

Preventable New Jersey Car Accidents

There are three bad habits that lead to car accidents so consistently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has written about them in an attempt to alert the public.  These include the following behaviors:

  • Distracted driving;
  • Driving too fast for conditions; and
  • Drowsy driving.

At Rosner Law Offices, P.C., we believe understanding some of the leading causes of New Jersey car accidents can help keep you and your loved ones safe.

Distracted Driving

Car Accident LawyersThe CDC states 9 people are killed, and 1,000 people are injured every day due to distracted driving.  Distracted driving involves any conduct which takes a driver’s attention away from the road.  It includes visual distractions, where you take your eyes off the road, such as looking at your phone.  Distracted driving also includes manual distractions, where you take your hands off the wheel, such as reaching for a phone.  Finally, cognitive distractions are defined by the CDC as taking your mind off your driving.  Texting is considered one of the most dangerous things a driver can do, as it requires visual, manual, and cognitive action.  Distracted driving leads to death and injury, yet distracted driving is totally preventable.

Driving Too Fast for Conditions

Speed limits are the maximum speed safe for the roadway.  However, this does not mean the speed limit is always safe.  In rain and snow, the speed limit might be too fast.  Drivers need to evaluate the circumstances each time they drive their car, and adjust their speed accordingly.

Drowsy Driving

The CDC says, “Drive alert and stay unhurt!”  Driving while tired contributes to car accidents every day.  But how do you know if you are just a little bit tired or about to fall asleep?  Warning signs that you may be about to fall asleep include the following:

  • Yawning;
  • Blinking frequently;
  • Missing your exit;
  • Crossing the rumble strip;
  • Drifting from your lane; and
  • Difficulty remembering the last few miles you have just driven.

If you experience any of these warning signs, pull over.  Either switch drivers or find a safe place to take a nap.  Better still, don’t get behind the wheel at all if you are drowsy.
