What sends most of New Jersey to the ER?

Some of the most common personal injuries

New Jersey Emergency RoomThe New Jersey Office of Injury Surveillance and Prevention found that personal injury is the 4th leading cause of death across the Garden State. Injuries kill almost 4,000 New Jersey residents every year, sending 60,000 more to the hospital.

While New Jersey has fairly low rates of fatal injuries compared to other states, a close look at the numbers reveal a more complex story.

Data from the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control shows that across the U.S., the leading cause of nonfatal injuries treated in emergency departments are unintentional falls, leading to almost 9 million hospitalizations every year across the nation.

Other leading causes include being struck by or against an object, overexertion and being involved in motor vehicle accidents.

In New Jersey, motor vehicle accidents represent the number one cause of unintentional injury throughout the state. All types of motor vehicle accidents kill around 800 New Jersey residents every year, sending another 7,000 residents to the hospital.

Included in the fatalities and injuries caused by motor vehicle accidents are pedestrians. New Jersey has a disproportionately high number of pedestrian accidents, actually placing it 7th in a ranking of most dangerous states for people walking or on bicycles.

Unintentional poisoning comes in second for personal injury rates throughout the state. Rates of unintentional poisoning have also skyrocketed in New Jersey more than anywhere else, in part due to the inclusion of drug overdoses in the data.

The increased proliferation of drugs such as heroin across the U.S. has subsequently raised injury and fatality rates due to poisoning for most localities.

The third biggest causes of unintentional injury in New Jersey are falls, the top cause in the nation. Falls create any number of serious injuries, depending on the circumstances of the incident.

Along with motor vehicle accidents, falls are often responsible for traumatic brain injuries. There are around 8,000 traumatic brain injuries in New Jersey, 1,000 which end up fatal.

You are not even safe at work, no matter what your profession. Reports from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show that around 4 out of every 100 full time employees, across all lines of work, will suffer a serious injury on the job in the state of New Jersey.

Data from the same reports show that the financial impact of these injuries is huge. Direct medical expenses alone cost New Jersey $2 billion. This translates into tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills for each injured person.

Anyone who has been hurt can benefit from speaking with a personal injury attorney. In most accident cases, there is always liability. Only an experienced attorney can best determine if you have a case.
